Electroporation

Electroporation is a technique used for many years to help improve the delivery of medication directly into the cells. This technology is being used in the world of cosmetics to help deliver beneficial skincare products directly into the heart of your skin cells and the surrounding structures.

Electroporation uses high-voltage electrical currents that are delivered through a hand held wand with a round, flat end. As the electrical current makes contact with the fatty outer layer of your cell (called the cell membrane), it causes the membrane to temporarily split apart, giving the nourishing ingredients in your skincare products to penetrate and enter the cell.

While electroporation is a highly effective scientific procedure, it’s actually quite simple to understand. Our cells are small, round bubbles that contain cytoplasm, a nucleus, and organelles. These cellular contents allow our cells to make proteins and to birth new cells when they die. In order to protect the contents of the cell, our cells have a thick, fatty layer that surrounds the outside called the cell membrane. This membrane selectively allows molecules to pass in and out of the cell.

Normally, our cell membranes create a barrier that keeps our skincare products outside of the cell. But the introduction of electroporation works by creating small, temporary openings in the cell wall. These openings allow the nourishing ingredients applied during your facial to pass through the cell membrane and directly into the cell.

The amount of direct current that can enter your skin is limited for safety, however, we are able to safely increase the voltage, which increases the amount of energy that is delivered to the skin through the current. A higher voltage means the electroporation is better able to penetrate deeply into the skin, and more efficiently open the cell walls.

The application of electroporation is quite simple. Electroporation should be used in conjunction with another comprehensive facial treatment.

Electroporation Steps

1. Your aesthetician will perform the other steps of the treatment you booked.
2. Once the nourishing skincare products from your treatment are applied, your electroporation will begin.
3. A small, hand held device is placed on your skin. It has a round, flat end that delivers the electric pulses to the skin.
4. The wand will be moved slowly and consistently across the skin.

Most of our facial treatments take around 45 minutes. Electroporation is an add-on treatment that is used in conjunction with many of our VIP treatments. The electroporation of the facial takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

An Electroporation facial is not suitable for those who:

• Suffer from epilepsy
• Have or have had cancer
• Use a pacemaker
• Have a muscular or nervous disease
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have orthopaedic implants

 Electroporation is safe for people who are HIV positive.

You don’t have to do much to prepare for your treatment! Before coming in for your treatment, make sure you refrain from waxing or other hair removal services for at least 48 hours. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 72 hours before your treatment. Also, you should stop taking any over-the-counter acne medications for at least 48 hours before your facial.

You’ll be able to return to your regular activities immediately following your treatment. Be sure to wear sunscreen after your treatment (and every day!) to protect your skin. Help elevate your results by drinking plenty of water the day of your treatment and afterwards.
