Our Technology

As we age, our hands age with us and despite how our faces and bodies look, our hands may be the true indication of how old we really are. Throughout our lives, our hands are exposed to the weather, harsh chemicals and other environmental factors that can cause them to age prematurely. Sun spots and discoloration, thinning skin and loss of fat and wrinkles can all make hands look aged and worn, well beyond their years. New advancements in aesthetic treatments, however, can help to correct these problems and make your hands look more youthful and less weathered.

Common Complaints and Treatment Options

After the age of 40, our hands can start to lose volume as fatty tissue decreases. This can leave our hands looking thin, veiny and wrinkled and much older than they actually are. Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice to decrease the appearance of bulging veins in the hand and consists of injecting a solution directly into the vein which causes scarring to occur. When the vein becomes scarred, blood flow will be redirected to other, healthier veins and will minimize the appearance of veins on the back of the hand. Dermal Filler is one common option that is used to increase the volume of the hands and make them look younger, fuller and smoother. An appropriate filler product is chosen and injected into the hand where it will plump up the skin and improve its appearance. Fat Transfer (also known as microlipoinjection or autologous fat transplantation) is another technique that can restore fatty tissue into the backs of the hands and give them a more youthful appearance. Fat is harvested from the patient’s thighs, buttocks or stomach area and after cleaning, is transferred, via injection, into the backs of the hand. Some of the fat cells may be reabsorbed back into the body, so the hands are usually overfilled with fatty matter which will reduce to normal levels over time.

The hands are one of the most exposed areas of the body and therefore are usually one of the most damaged areas as well. Photodamage from the sun’s UV rays and exposure to environmental pollutants and chemicals can cause discoloration and age spots to appear. TCA Peels use a chemical, similar in its make-up to vinegar, called trichloroacetic acid to gently peel off the top layer of skin cells. When applied to the backs of the hand, the outer layer of skin dries up and gently flakes off over the course of a few days. This process reveals the newer, fresher skin underneath and removes any surfaces blemishes. IPL Treatments (also known as photo facial treatments) use intense pulsed light to target any discolorations on the skin. The light is absorbed by the discolored skin, where it is turned into heat, essentially damaging that skin. The body’s natural reaction is to remove the damaged area and replace it with new skin. This process also stimulates collagen production. Laser Therapy works in much the same way as IPL treatments to remove hyperpigmentation and improve the look of the skin. Both procedures require between three and six session for maximum results to be achieved. Tretinoin Treatment is one of the least invasive methods to reverse the signs of aging on your hands. This topical prescription preparation can be applied to the skin of the hands daily and over time will reduce discoloration and can also help to firm and tighten the skin, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. Platelet Rich Plasma (PLP) Therapy is a technique where a small amount of the patient’s blood is withdrawn and processed in a centrifuge to remove the red blood cells. The remaining plasma is injected into the patient’s hands which stimulates new cell growth and the repair of old cells. PLP therapy can slow down the aging process and repair any damage that has already occurred.
